Mixing Phenibut and Adderall: A Safe Combination?

Medically Reviewed

Phenibut is a nootropic drug. This is a type of drug that is meant to enhance your intelligence by boosting your brain’s performance. These drugs are usually marketed as memory boosters, smart drugs, or brain-enhancing drugs.

The idea is that taking these drugs can improve your brain and your memory’s way of working. In theory, nootropics keep the cells in your brain from aging and prevent damage caused by toxins. Some common foods, such as turmeric and coffee, can be considered nootropics in this sense.

Phenibut is a supplement that falls into this category, and Adderall is a prescription drug that is considered a nootropic as well. In an interview with Men’s Health, Dr. Brian Lebowitz explained that Adderall and caffeine are the only nootropics that have been proven to work. Caffeine allows you to focus by increasing your ability to pay attention. Adderall, which is only available with a prescription, works by increasing neurotransmitters in your brain. This forces your neurons to communicate better.

History of Phenibut

Phenibut is a supplement that became popular because of Reddit users who said this drug could help them treat anxiety. Some people even report feeling happier after taking. It does not require a prescription and was invented in Russia in the 1960s. It was part of the medical kits for astronauts from the country during the space race.

The drug was created to treat anxiety and fear, and it is used for the same purposes in some parts of Eastern Europe today. Phenibut has so far been banned in some countries, such as Australia, as it has been linked to overdoses there.

More research needs to be conducted to prove that nootropics really do enhance the brain. They are still popular with students today thanks to their supposed abilities.

As of December 2017, Phenibut remains legal to buy in the United States. It can be found easily online, but it has not been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). adderall and phenibut

Some people report feeling relaxed after taking the drug. There is concern in the medical community that some people might be using phenibut to cope with mental health issues that would be better treated by board-certified medical professionals. It is unclear whether phenibut will stay legal in the U.S.

The substance is known on the streets as “party powder,” “pbut,” and “noofen.” The most common brand of phenibut is Bifren. Usually, it is sold as a capsule or a powder.

How Phenibut Works

According to studies, phenibut can penetrate the barrier between the brain and the blood. This barrier exists to stop harmful or toxic substances from traveling through the bloodstream to reach the brain. It can be used as a tranquilizer because it acts as a depressant for the central nervous system.

One animal study from Pharmacological Research shows that phenibut may be able to boost brain function after a stroke. Still, it has not been approved for therapeutic purposes in the United States, the European Union, or Australia.

Side Effects

Phenibut may be able to induce a feeling of calm in some people, but it is not without its side effects. Some of these include breathing problems and depression of the nervous system.

Some people may also experience the following upon ingesting phenibut:

It is also easy to become tolerant of phenibut, and some people may do so after just a few days of use. Tolerance requires you to take more of a drug to feel the same way as you did when you started to take it. People who are tolerant of phenibut may experience withdrawal symptoms if they decrease their dosage or try to quit using it altogether. This may result in insomnia or anxiety.

Phenibut and Other Drugs

Adderall is another nootropic, but there are many differences between this drug and phenibut.

Still, both drugs are often used for recreational purposes. Some people even use them at the same time to enhance their experiences or focus.

Adderall also has these side effects associated with its use:

In rare cases, some people have reported psychosis. This is more common in people who already had a history of this issue before using Adderall.

Adderall contains amphetamine and dextroamphetamine. Some people have reported combining Adderall with phenibut. Some people report that it is essential to avoid alcohol if phenibut and Adderall are used together. Since the only information on combining these drugs is anecdotal, more scientific research is needed to know about the risks of this combination.

It’s important to note that Adderall should not be combined with certain substances. It is sometimes prescribed with Prozac or Xanax, as Adderall assists with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and Xanax and Prozac can assist with anxiety or depression. Phenibut is sometimes used along with Adderall because it causes people to feel calm.

Adderall can even interact with caffeine by enhancing your ability to focus, but that means you should be careful when drinking coffee after taking Adderall. In a Vice article, a man reportedly used nootropics to try to wean himself off Adderall. Though he touts that it worked for him, it does not mean that will happen for everyone.

Is There a Safe Amount of Phenibut?

Phenibut has not been researched enough to determine a safe amount. Plus, its effects can change when combined with other nootropics or drugs. Still, phenibut has been linked to some overdoses. It does not help that phenibut is unregulated in most circumstances.

The most important thing to keep in mind is that phenibut is not meant to be combined with other drugs. People who use it can quickly develop a tolerance, and that makes it difficult to continue using the same dose to get the same effects. This means that taking phenibut consistently could result in an increased risk of overdose.
